Drawing and Painting with Jutta Gloeckner

Escape your studios, to Andalucia in February, for this exciting painting and drawing course with a new teacher to CRA.

Jutta Gloeckner, an experienced teacher, is planning a variety of challenges for her group, from still life to landscape using the joyous array of pottery, fabrics, art and architecture that Casa Rosa offers indoors and its Mediterranean plants, streams, lake and mountain environs outdoors.

In February the evergreen olives, cypresses, citrus and viburnums will provide greenery and spectacularly scattered pink blossoms and contrasting black trunks of the almond trees are stunning. The mountains will provide their usual scenic backdrop, with a colour palette that changes with the time of day from silver through pink to deep navy blue folds.

There are adequate facilities for sheltered painting with a spacious studio, a wrap around veranda and, if not warm enough, there is the main salon of the house where there is a log fire and central heating. Lunch is usually held outside in the sun on the veranda.

Painting with Fibres - Felt Making Retreat with Sarah Waters

Join Sarah Waters for a week’s retreat at our gorgeous hillside villa, Casa Rosa, in the foothills of the Sierras, an hours drive from Malaga, near the small town of Periana.

Learn how to create felt on the Casa Rosa Estate, in the inspirational and rural Andalucian countryside, with Sarah teaching you how to ‘paint’ with fibres using the ancient art of felt making. You will be taking traditional felt techniques into modern concepts of art.  Sarah will guide you through technical exercises that inform your own creative outcomes, creating 2D felt art or more sculptural 3D work. You will focus on design and colour mixing of the fibres, cutting and layering techniques to produce samples and finished items. Sarah will also introduce you to nuno felting (incorporation of fabrics) to add an extra dimension to your designs. You will work as a group on set exercises, then apply the concepts to your own style.

  • non-felting partners, sharing a room, £950 board and lodging

  • taxi service to and from airport included if you arrive at our suggested time.

Plein Air Painting with Sam Clayden

The Plein Air Landscape Painting workshop is designed for artists of all levels. The course will cover everything from composition, colour mixing and colour theory to drawing, brushwork and battling the potential impracticalities of working outside.

This intensive workshop will focus on capturing fleeting moments of light in the beautiful Andalucian landscape. Casa Rosa sits in a rural idyll surrounded by mountains, distant villages and olive groves. Students will paint multiple studies per day, of a variety of scenes and at a range of sizes. In addition there will be a few larger projects to work on over the course of two days. You can expect to be equipped with knowledge of the key principles of oil painting and experience of picture-making outside in constantly changing light conditions.

A Casa Rosa Art course

Enjoy the welcoming, supportive, house party atmosphere of art retreats at Casa Rosa. You can come on your own, with friends, family or partners, you can enjoy the privacy and space of Casa Rosa, be part of a group or you can choose to be more solitary. If you want to spend some relaxation time on your own, there are walks through the countryside, or up to Periana the local village. The rooms are quiet and extremely comfortable. We endeavour to make your stay as peaceful and enjoyable as we can.

Casa Rosa sits in the middle of its own orchards and has fruit in all seasons though, fresh from the tree, the winter olives and seville oranges are not recommended. But on a walk in the countryside a fresh sweet orange plucked from a tree is a delicious treat. The garden is also planted to offer flowers year round. The house and cottages are full of delightful surprises, pictures, pottery and antiques collected locally and from years of travel.

Have a look at the facilities of Casa Rosa Estate – tennis court, pool, ping pong table – freely available and the nearby village only a walk away.

Meals will be a communal affair, cooked by me with helpers, artists and guests eating together. The produce is sourced locally where possible, including the olive oil which comes from the estate.

Wednesday will usually be a day off for everyone. Meals will be available throughout your stay.

Locally Sourced Food & Wine

Casa Rosa’s orchards produce the olives, almonds, honey, pomegranates, citrus fruit and olive oil used in our catering. And in the evenings, you may be tempted with cocktails made from Casa Rosa fruit.

Meals are a relaxed social event, eaten together with the team. Delicious Spanish wines will be available plus copious amounts of tea, coffee and other soft drinks.
